What they are known for
Brothers Ernst and Friedrich Nippes opened the workshop in 1923. It is still run by the family — Markus Nippes took it over from his father in 2002, in the third generation.
Nippes makes instruments that end up sold under other names. This is common in Solingen and not a secret: a mature workshop with good grinding capacity supplies brands that have distribution but no forge.
For a buyer it means one thing: you can often get the same instrument for less by buying the maker rather than the label.
The steel
Nickel-plated carbon and stainless, depending on the line. Their clippers are the recognisable ones — heavy lever, wide jaw, the kind that goes through a thick toenail without the flexing you feel in drugstore tools.
Who it suits
People with thick or hard nails, where a light instrument simply bends instead of cutting.
