What makes stainless steel stainless
Chromium in the alloy reacts with oxygen to form an extremely thin, transparent oxide film across the surface. That film is the corrosion resistance — the steel underneath rusts as readily as any other. Scratch the film and it rebuilds within minutes, provided oxygen is available.
Passivation is the controlled version of that process, done at the end of manufacture: the instrument is cleaned of iron particles left by grinding, then treated in an acid bath so the film forms evenly and completely rather than around embedded contamination.

Not to be confused with
Plating. Nickel or chrome plating is a separate metal layer applied over carbon steel; passivation adds nothing, it conditions the steel’s own surface.
How instruments get damaged
Three ways, in order of frequency: stored damp in a closed leather case; left in contact with a rusting instrument, which transfers particles; wiped with a chlorine-based cleaner. The first two are habits, the third is a choice. Alcohol and standard instrument disinfectants are safe.
Practical care
Rinse, dry, and put the instrument away open and dry. If a spot does appear, deal with it early — surface rust polishes off, pitting does not.

Does passivation wear off?
The layer reforms by itself in air, so ordinary use is fine. Chlorides — bleach, pool water, some disinfectants — attack it faster than it can rebuild, and that is when pitting starts.
Why did my stainless instrument develop rust spots?
Usually contact rust: it was stored touching a rusting carbon-steel instrument, or left wet in a closed pouch. The spots are often removable with a polish, if caught early.
Can I passivate an instrument at home?
Not properly. But you can protect the layer: rinse, dry, store dry and open, and keep bleach away from it.
